What is a garage floor epoxy system?
A real garage system is several layers, not one coat of paint. We grind the concrete to open it up, fill cracks and pits, roll a primer that soaks into the slab, add a pigmented base coat, and finish with a tough clear topcoat. Many homeowners add a broadcast flake layer between the base and top coats for texture and color.
How do we prep the slab?
Prep decides whether a coating lasts. We use diamond grinders with vacuums attached to remove old sealers, paint, and the weak top layer of concrete. Grinding concrete creates fine silica dust, which is why we run dust collection the whole time. You can read OSHA's page on crystalline silica dust for why that matters.
After grinding we fill cracks, patch spalled spots, and test the slab for moisture. Marine moisture and irrigated yards mean we check slabs for vapor coming up before we choose a primer.
Why does garage epoxy matter here?
Santa Maria's cool, foggy mornings and steady afternoon wind keep garages damp and dusty more than hot. Many garages double as workshops or hold boots, tools, and gear that track in field dust every day. A sealed floor keeps dust down, keeps fluids from soaking in, and makes the space easier to use.
What affects the cost?
- Size. One-, two-, and three-car garages are priced by square foot.
- Old coatings. Peeling paint or kit epoxy takes extra grinding to remove.
- Cracks and pitting. More patching means more labor and material.
- Topcoat. Polyaspartic topcoats cost more than standard epoxy clear coats but resist UV and cure faster.
If you need the garage back quickly, ask about a faster-curing topcoat that can cut the downtime.
Garage floor epoxy FAQs
Do I need to empty the garage?
Yes. The whole floor needs to be clear so we can grind wall to wall. Most people move things to the driveway or a side yard for a couple of days.
Will the coating hide cracks?
We fill cracks before coating, so they are much less visible. Flake hides them best. Cracks that are still moving can show again over time.
Can you coat the garage steps too?
Yes. Steps and the strip in front of the door are common add-ons, priced with the floor.
